Help me consider whether to cancel holiday?

Early stages of mums diagnosis.  Awaiting oncologist appointment but plan is surgery sandwiched with chemotherapy.  6 sessions of chemo with three weeks in between.

Not sure when chemo will start or if it will be 3 or 4 sessions of chemo prior to surgery so the big question mark is when the surgery will happens. Mum will be in hospital for a week and it is major surgery.

I have a 10 night holiday booked in 12 weeks time.

Do I cancel now on the basis that it may coincide with the surgery or do you think it’s likes to be after 12/13 weeks anyway?  Will I really want to be on holiday in three months time when my mum is in the thick of chemo and heading towards surgery?

I don’t know what to do but final payment will be due soon so decision may be better taken now?

any thought?

  • Has your mum been given a cancer nurse helpline number she can contact for any advice? If not, look at the hospital website and see if the department that covers your mum's type of cancer has a contact number for the cancer nurse as they are the ones that can give you a general idea as to a possible time span. If you can't find a number to ring for the nurse, contact the consultant's secretary (again, the number should be on the hospital website or any hospital literature mum has). Explain your situation and ask if there is anyone that can you ring you back with some advice. Also ask - if you do cancel & your insurance needs a hospital letter, who should you send it to?

Meanwhile, is there anyone else in the family that can be with mum if the timeline changes?

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, great advice and I will speak to the team.
