Insurance for a first time home buyer

Hi, I am buying my first house. The mortgage has been approved by a lender and I have received a draft contract of the fixtures and fittings plus the survey will be done on 01 May 2025.

I work as a nurse after my diagnosis and treatment for cervical cancer in August 2013 aged 23 years old. I was discharged in 2015 from gynae and oncology and have self managed the side effects of radiotherapy and brachytherapy on my bowel since then with minimal to no input from gastro and colorectal. I have no other past medical or familial history of serious health issues.

As I'm buying my first house alone I have been through the personal health questions and am after advice on whether to take critical illness cover out? I have been told I am at higher risk of another cancer and should consider this.

I have no children and no long term partner.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

  • Hello KingsleyR,

Congratulations on buying your first house! It sounds like it's all heading in the right direction with your mortgage being approved by a lender. I think you are right to try and get expert advice on whether you should take critical illness cover. There is information on our website on medical insurance and cancer and you can find out more about critical illness insurance on the Citizens Advice site. Perhaps you should get in touch with your local Citizens Advice and talk to someone, explain your situation and  see what they suggest. Macmillan also have a section on insurance and cancer and don't hesitate to get in touch with them for advice on your particular situation as they have a lot of experience giving financial and practical support to anyone who is or has been affected by cancer.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been in a similar situation and that they will be along shortly with some good suggestions for you.

Best wishes and good luck with your first home purchase! What an exciting time it must be for you and I hope that everything will go smoothly.
