Thyroid sent tumour to pelvis: need advice on travel insurance

Last year it was found that my thyroid was cancerous.  I had no symptoms beforehand.  I thought I had sciatica on my left side/back.  Then they found that my thyroid had sent tumour to my left pelvis.  This was the “sciatica” I thought it was.  I had radiotherapy, then in October my thyroid was removed.  In January I had radio iodine therapy.  Apparently there is no more tumours anywhere else, so in my mind am cancer free.  I go back for scan in June just to be safe.  Anyone else had something similar as am being told I am unique in this!!   Am also trying to find travel insurance so I can go abroad.  My oncologist said I should treat myself with holiday and she would cover me with letter if necessary.

i suppose the mention of cancer to any insurance company would be a red flag and probably cost me a lot of money.  Anyone advise??????

  • Hello jennieflea,

What a shock it must have been to find out that the sciatica you thought you had was linked to a cancerous thyroid. It sounds like the treatment worked its magic and I am so glad you are now cancer free and I hope that the scan in June will confirm this. It's nice that you are making plans to go away - your oncologist is right, there's nothing more relaxing than getting away and treating yourself to a holiday.

I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title and moved your thread to our Travel related category so that it can be more easily noticed by some of our members - many of them have done their research on travel insurance and will I am sure have good tips for you based on their personal experiences.

You will also find helpful information on our website on getting travel insurance which I hope will give you some good guidance. Macmillan also have great resources on cancer and buying travel insurance.

I hope this helps a little and that you will hear from the experiences of others who have been in a similar position before.

Best of luck finalising all this and once it's all sorted, I hope that you can then look forward to a lovely well-deserved trip away.

    Best wishes,
