Travelling with lung cancer: I have no idea about travel insurance

Hi , I have incurable lung cancer, I am 5 years on from diagnosis and have had 2 years of immunotherapy which has shrunk my tumours and so far they have remained shrunken and stable. I am currently in really good health. My daughters bought us a girls trip to a spa hotel in Budapest for my 60th birthday last year and as I'm not a seasoned traveller I have no idea about travel insurance. We are due to travel next month so I'm currently looking for advice. I've looked at staysure then I get to the part where they ask is your cancer terminal. I know it's incurable but would that be classed as terminal even though I'm in good health at the moment? I used their chat and they couldn't say whether it's classed as terminal or not. I would appreciate any advice from someone in a similar situation.  Thank you

  • Hi Google insurancewithin all one word travel insurance, they specialise in all sorts of cancer I have been diagnosed with incurable bone cancer I used these in November it is a lengthy form to fill in as they do ask a lot of questions about your health but worth trying good luck x

  • Thank you so much,  I'll have a look .

  • You are welcome x

  • I would get yourself a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) free from the NHS to begin with, it covers you for emergency treatment in all EU countries plus a few more. You just pay the same cost as a native does for treatment in a foreign country which is often free. Medical insurance with cancer can be a minefield but at least the GHIC card is a good start.

  • Thank you so much for that information MauriceS I'll get right on it now.

  • Hi Angelic

Maurice has given us really good advice re GHIC card. I applied 8 weeks ago and card has still not arrived. However it is possible to be reimbursed on return to UK even if you do not have the physical card, so applying early as possible seems a good idea. Ive been refused insurance with insurancewith.com and Allclear but quoted £380 for a week in Spain with Staysure. Ive got next immunotherapy this week then I'm off for a break regardless. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

  • My application for GHIC card has been accepted , I may not get it back in time for my trip but at least I know it's in process. I just have to sort my medical insurance now. First port of call is getting to speak to my gp to find out if I'm classed as terminal or not. Wish me luck,I've spent over 2 hours in a phone queue with my surgery before now . You just have to be determined to get stuff done these days  haha

  •  thats good best of luck x
