Working whilst caring for someone with cancer

Good evening,

I am looking for some advise for a family member.

my sister in law has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and her partner works for an agency in hospitality. Which means he does not qualify for carers leave or any other statutory work benefit. However, her partner would still rather work for his own mental health and to continue to bring in money as carers allowance is only £80 per week.

my question is, before they make a joint claim is there any advise that I could provide or what is the best way to navigate this situation?

thanks

  • Hi Hollieledingham85,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister-in-law's diagnosis and the financial hardship that this could bring to the family. Carer's allowance depends upon their income, but attendance allowance is something that your sister-in-law may qualify for in her own right, as it is not means dependent. If life expectancy is less than 6 months, the application can be accelerated. Please contact Macmillan, who can help you with this. There may even be an information centre run by them in your local hospital.

They should be able to tell you of any other help that you can get too.

I hope that this helps them move forward.

Please keep in touch and let us know how they get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
