Hi there

i have been off work since may and have been on ssp as my employer doesnt have sick pay . This is due to run out mid November and i am due to start chemo on October 31 for 24 weeks. I had major surgery to remove all the bad bits but was also told it will probably cone back as it was stage 4 when they got it .i wouldnt be able to return to my current job as this includes working alone and heavy lifting  but am not sure how this will affect any claim i make for anything.

any help would be. Good

  • Hello Hubble. Sorry to read about your situation and hope your treatment goes well for you

I was off sick from work with my cancer treatment. I was lucky in that my employer paid my full wage for 12 months then paid half for a further 6 months. My job was on the railway. When I was receiving reduced income, I was entitled to employment support allowance while I was off sick. Once I returned to work this obviously stopped.
I would get in touch with benefits office and speak to them asap. They should be able to help and advise you on what you are entitled to. You may be entitled to back payment of anything you are entitled to but you would need to show proof of when the sick leave commenced.
I was unable to return to my previous role so took a different position within the company but that didn’t help my condition and I was paid off on early retirement due to being medically unfit.
I had a good pension which they honoured due to medical retirement but I understood that I would get benefits if I hadn’t been able to claim them early, so I would think you’d be entitled to help as well

I wish you well with your treatment and hope you can resolve the financial side too

last thing you need is money worries when you have enough to worry about

    good luck n take care

  • Hi yes if you look at getting universal credit or ESA  if you paid enough tax contribution . My ssp just ran out this month my job is still open, but they no longer pay me so as I was also on universal credit because I was on a low wage universal credit will top this up when my ssp ends I have  also filled out a U 50 form which is a medical form still on going 3 months they pay a bit more money  but still waiting  for this also which ables  me to not have to have to have face to face meetings with universal credit you have to go see them every week as unfit on medical and just had a operation it’s a very stressful time filling out forms waiting for money to come online assessments and face-to-face and phone calls every week on top of just having surgery and treatment .. so if you have a good have a good friend who can help you do all this it’s less stressful good luck x Julia
