Do i qualify for financial help

Hi, I received a stage 4 terminal diagnosis for malignant melanoma last week.  I will start targeted therapy (enco/bini) in 2 weeks. My oncologist said if this fails to work I maybe have a year but if the drugs can hold things at bay then 4yrars plus (new drug no longterm data at present)

Anyhow I stopped working early Dec 23 as I had a groin dissection surgery and thought I'd just need 6-8wks off work.

I now have relentless coughing and breathlessness as the cancer has spread to my lungs and t6 spine. I can't return to work as I was a part time carer and cleaner for an elderly gentleman. I worked privately for him.

What if anything am I entitled to? I've found the whole thing quite overwhelming and abit confusing. My husband works full time and on a decent-ish salary.

I'd still like to contribute to our finances as the money I learnt was mine to spend on myself or days out etc..

Any advice most welcome please?

  • Hi Sarahlou,

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis - hopefully the treatment plan your team have in place will be successful (the new drugs are showing promising results).

You may want to look at this Macmillan link which shows the Benefits available & what you may be eligible for Macmillan Cancer Benefits Calculator | Macmillan Cancer Support

Meanwhile, I will send you a friend request. If you accept it we can chat by private message and share more information which you may find helpful.

    Good luck,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hi,

When I was diagnosed at Stage 4, I contacted our local MacMillan service and their benefits advisor made a PIP application on my behalf.
They have a fast track arrangement with the DWP. My PIP payments were backdated to the date of my diagnosis.
It isn’t means-tested and getting it wouldn’t affect your entitlement to any other benefits.
If you need one, being on PIP can help you get a blue badge for car parking.

    Good luck!
    Dave
