Time of work as a carer

Hi Please i am looking for some advise i am my mums carer as she had cancer 4 years ago and took a turn for the worse during chemo, she then got better and now has cancer again they have said that they can only shrink the cancer and not cure this she is having to attend radio therapy and chemo for the next 6- 8 months I have asked my employer for time off and i will make up the hours and they have declined this as a carer what rights do i have? i have supplied them with appointment letters etc she has no means of getting to the appointments etc

  • You're better calling Maggies or Macmillans and seeing what they say about this. As far as i know, you're entitled to around one week carer's leave per year, and even then, i might be wrong on this. Pretty sure a lot of the "understanding" around this has to come from the actual employer. There are new rules coming in next year which doesn't actually help the here and now situation. Even then, they may not even change much.

  • Forgot to add, a lot of what i said is related to unforeseen things such as accidents etc, rather than foreseen events as it is in your case. Might even be less leeway with your case, but you really need to contact someone who knows about this. Even citizen's advice.

  • Hi thanks for your reply her health is getting worse and requires assistance for personal care she is short of breath also it’s a really hard situation but I will take your advise and contact them thank you
