Benefits Entitlement

I would like to know if my dad could claim any benefits. He's 87, not getting any other benefits, and has had multiple myeloma for the last 18 months. My mum (who's 84) cares for him and is finding it very hard, physically and mentally. They've never been told or been given any advice about claiming benefits since he was diagnosed, which would make their lives just a little easier. Have had a look on the Gov website and think he could possibly get Attendance Allowance and my mum Carer's Allowance. How easy is it to apply? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Ange

I'm sorry to hear about the situation that your Mum and Dad find themselves in.

I'd certainly recommend that you, or your parents, contact the Macmillian benefits advice line. I know they are experts in that field and will be able to give you some advice and support.

If your Dad has a clinical nurse specialist or any other nursing support such as district nursing or hospice nursing then you can also speak to them as they may be able to assist with completing the necessary paperwork. They will also be able to let you know what practical support your parents can access to help with things at home. Alternatively do speak to your Dad's GP surgery to talk things through with them.

I'm sure that some of our members who have been in similar circumstances will post to share their experiences with you but I just wanted to give you that link as a starting point.

    Best wishes,
