Self employed, can u have paid time off when you're a carer?

Good morning,

My grandmother is having end of life care for colon cancer. She has decided to be at home for her final days, we have carers that come in 4 times a day, District nurses and sue ryder nurses.

As my grandmother doesn't want to be alone My aunt and father take it in turns staying with her at night, it has become very stressful for my father as he works as a scaffolder and has to leave my grandmother's house at 5.30am to go to work. He is in his 60s.

I have been trying to find anything online as to weather he could take paid time off to care for his mother in her final days. As he is self employed I haven't found anything so was wondering if anyone could offer advice.

He is unable to just take unpaid time off as he has mortgage and bills to pay, any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read or respond.

Kind regards.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat C although I'm very sorry to hear your grandmother is entering the final stages of her cancer journey.

This must be very difficult for you all but our community are here for you and will do all they can to support you.

The NHS have some very useful information about coping financially but it may be worth getting in touch with Macmillan as they have financial experts you can discuss this with and get more advice.

Citizen's Advice may be able to help your dad figure out what options are available to him as well.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in the same position as your dad will offer their advice to you soon but in the meantime, we're thinking of you and sending our strength your way.

    Kind regards,
