Anyone WITHOUT Pelvic Radiation Disease after radiotherapy?

Hi,

I am going to have external n internal radiotherapy to treat womb cancer. I read a lot about the late side effects. They are very scary. Really hope I can hear some positive stories to make me believe that there is still hope for an acceptable life after the radiotherapy.

Anyone has a good story to share?

Many thanks!

  • Hello Chuifan

I had external (25) and brachytherapy (internal x 3) in Dec 19/Jan 20.  Even though it looks like a long time ago, I would say in the last couple of months I have only now feel that I have completely recovered.  And by that I mean recovering from the treatment, rather than the tumour (which was blasted away in a matter of weeks).  At the time you go into it relatively fit and healthy, and it ends (for cervical cancer) after 5 weeks, which is quick.  I was fine afterwards but the after effects kicked in about 3 months later.  Luckily last year I was able to work from home, so could recover.  I had random heat being generated in my pelvis... which was strange and scary, and I have to put it down to the radiotherapy.  I often wander what all that radiation has done to my insidews. I have to use the dilators, but have given up on them in the last few months.  The radio has not had a good effect on my pelvic organs, but as far as I know, I didn't get pelvic radiation disease as my bladder and bowel continue to work well.  I also had the latest state of the art radiotherapy machine, that might have helped.  I wonder if it's all luck of the draw, and how good the team is who "work" on you.  So I've come through it, there is no sign of the tumour (nothing could have survived what they did to it!) and I now feel I can move on without any peculiar aches and pains - they've all stopped, and I'm sure they were all related to the radiotherapy.  You'll get through this, and get back to normal.  Look at in the long-term, even though your treatment is relatively short, it takes a while for your body to recover.  Good luck, Diane

  • Thank you very much Diane. Your sharing has brightened up my day. I am realistic to accept that life will not be the same but I do need some positive stories to give me the energy to get things done and move on.

I sincerely hope that you continue to have satisfactory progress back on track to normal life.

I must thank you again. I had tears in my eyes when reading your reply.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Chuifan

I had 32 rounds of pelvic radiotherapy and while I had side effects while undergoing treatment, which is very common, I wasn’t left with any lasting side effects, and certainly not pelvic radiation disease. I found my side effects disappeared very soon after treatment in fact.

I would recommend concentrating on getting through the treatment rather than reading about possible lasting side effects afterwards. I know many, many women who have gone through this treatment and while they may have some bladder and bowel issues which persist, pelvic radiation disease is not something I have seen spoken about very often in any cancer group I’m in. Good luck with your treatment, and I hope it goes smoothly for you. xx

  • Thank you Minska! Your sharing has given me a lot of positive energy. Just an hour ago, I talked to the specialist nurse who follows up my case. She also gave me some useful and positive information. I must say I am very fortunate to be able to seek personal and professional support from you all.

    Best wishes to you Minska!

Happy Christmas and a better 2022 for all of us!
