Melanoma and hearing loss

I was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 skin melanoma. The diagnosis was hard to cope with mentally as I'm sure those with cancer will agree with. I'm relatively young, 45, with three children (19,15 and 13). I had always wished I'd be indestructible and live to be able to see the kids get married, find out who killed JFK, go in to space and see aliens arrive on our plant . . . you know all the things most people want to do :laugh

In addition to the diagnosis I was also confirmed as BRAF positive. I feel like things are going well but it's a big mental challenge to cope with the daily thoughts and keep myself positive.
Over the last few months, since the diagnosis and subsequent treatment I started to get myself in a stronger mental place only to be hit with more hearing loss (I had a sudden bout of hearing loss in 2013 while living in the US which was never really diagnosed but I ended up with hearing aids). This second hearing loss problem has really hit me and I'm struggling to cope with the daily thoughts of living with cancer and not being able to hear (although I can with my hearing aids).

How does everyone cope with the what I'm sure are the daily struggles of living with cancer and other conditions or side effects?

  • Hi Helenka

I am sure your hearing problem on top of the rest is causing you real frustration. Having your wee son to think about - every Mum's top priority- makes the whole thing so much more of a worry.

If you live in Scotland, it may be worth getting in touch with the charity MASScot (Melanoma Action and Support Scotland). They provide one to one counselling and hypnotherapy from qualified, experienced in cancer care and insured people. All are working via Zoom now and it works well.

The CRUK website is good sound information but for the most accurate info on YOUR mel - speak to your clinical nurse specialist, she has all your results.

I was diagnosed 40 years ago, I had two bad years with secondaries in my neck and spine. We did not have the new drugs then - and I am still here. I was 6 months pregnant when diagnosed and my baby is now 40. So it can be done. Keep your chin up.

  • Thank you for bottom of heart ️ You all cancer fighters giving me some much hope!!!! Thank you

  • Thanks [@Helenka1981]‍

How was you procedure this week? It was the wide local and extraction right? The lymph node test is interesting because after my operation I remember having my first pee and it was green I was told the would happen it's just funny.

As my operation was during Covid I was also alone which was tough as it would have nice to have seen family.

Let me know how you got on.

  • [@melfoughtandwon]‍ the group you have sounds awesome. It must be good to have people locally that you can share your experiences with.

May I ask how far along some of you are with your journey's? I'm assuming it gets easier as time goes by; I hope so.

Did you have hypnotherapy? For what purpose? Was it useful?

I wish I was close enough to benefit from a group like that, but sadly I'm at the opposite end of the island, near London

  • Ben,

I know is probably a long shot but are there any articles that talk about how many people survive stage 3 melanoma?

I just want to read/see that it is possible to live a long healthy "normal" life after the diagnosis. Doctors are great at helping but not necessarily direct with such answers?

  • I have only consultations with the surgeon. He sad I have to wait for my appointment to hospital. So I'm waiting...I will let you know when it will be done Thank you xxxxx

  • The waiting is the hardest part. Try to stay positive.

do you have a timescale; days, weeks waiting?

  • I don't know? he sad next week or week after....I staying positive....I believe everything will be fine!!!
