Palliative radiotherapy muscle invasive bladder cancer. Help

So after talking to the consultant re my dad's bladder cancer, which has not spread and is muscle invasive. Due to him having cerebral palsy it's been advised  he try palliative radiotherapy once a week for 6 weeks due to the effects on his quality of life from  bladder surgery and radical radiotherapy it has not been advised as it would be a challenge for him.

Is this treatment going to help prolong his life and let him enjoy more time with his family ? How long extra will he be getting? (I know its a question that can never be answered)  At the moment the only real symptoms he has is nocturia.  I'm not sure how much this treatment is going to enhance his life and what extra time it will give him?

Has anyone had experience with this type of cancer and or a family member. Have you/they had treatment and carried on living life for years? Or are we just delaying things only for a matter of months making symptoms possibly worse?

The consultant saidthe cancer he has is the usual cancer they find in the bladder so nothing extreme, it's just it's gone through the muscle of the bladder.

Any help/advice greatly recieved .

Thanks

  • Hello Cc2015

I'm not sure that we have any members currently active here on the forum who have experience with this kind of treatment. It sounds like you have quite a few questions about the treatment that your Dad is being offered and it's understandable that you may be worried about how it may impact how his quality of life.

We have some information about advanced bladder cancer on our website but I wonder if you might find it helpful to give our team ofnurses a call and chat things through with them. I'm sure they will be happy to give you some information and try and answer some of your questions. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your Dad's treatment goes smoothly.

    Best wishes,
