Having a double mastectomy tomorrow, what's your experience?

Hey everyone,

I was diagnosed with stage 2, grade 3 breast cancer last year at 36 years old. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation and after a diagnosis of BRCA2 I am having a double mastectomy tomorrow.

Could anyone offer their experience of what to expect please? I'm dreading it but hopefully it won't won't half as bad as I've made it in my head to be.

Thank you,

  • Hi Rachael.

I had a single mastectomy, full removal of lymph nodes and a implant reconstruction at the beginning of October at 36 years old. Prior to that I'd had chemo.
I stayed in hospital overnight due to the reconstruction, it was recommended. My experience was good. The surgery was long but went well. I just slept on and off all day and was given paracetamol and ibuprofen, nothing stronger which was fine.  I just found I was very tired and not in as much pain as I assumed I'd be.
I had two drains and a pico dressing which were all just annoying having to carry them round everywhere. If you have drains a great tip is wear your dressing gown inside out and they will fit nicely in the pockets and everyone else will just think you can't dress yourself. A few days after surgery the pain got a little worse just under my breast where the incision was and I was immediately given codine which helped. I only struggled with this on and off for a few days. I found I ached more as opposed to being in pain. I've had some physio and seen my surgeon a few times to check the healing and dressings. My first dressing change was also not too bad as I was still numb. Nearly a month later I'm still a bit numb and a bit achey but have much more movement in my arm.

My mum had a single mastectomy a few years ago in her 60s and left the hospital the same day and had afternoon tea the day after at a cafe. She found the process also not too painful.

    Good luck with your surgery.
