Mothers terminal diagnosis has improved?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask a few questions. In July my Mam was given the grim prognosis of terminal lung cancer 10-12 months to live. It was devastating, we all rallied round, talked it through helped her through the difficult days, cook healthy nutritious meals etc. My Mam even at her lowest days has kept a strong and positive mindset, has done absolutely everything asked of her. Just as she was accepting her diagnosis and making peace with it, she had an update after her second scan, she was initially offered 4 rounds of palliative chemo... Her oncologist have her and my auntie the news on Monday that the tumours have shrunk, they want to proceed with two more chemos the radiotherapy and review it again. She asked what does this mean time wise to which he replied, we are not focussing on time anymore. Could this mean she's going into remission? I know that they are very pleased with her progress and overall health. I know they wouldn't have offered her more treatment if there wasn't hope. Also at the start radiotherapy wasn't even mentioned. I assume they didn't expect her to react so well to treatment but I also believe it's her fight and positivity that has gotten her here.

  • Hello Lmcc87 and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

It sounds like it's been very tough for you all over the last few months but it's great to hear your mum has been responding well to her treatment.

Unfortunately no-one here can say what this comment means but hopefully you (with your mum's permission), or your mum, can get clarification on this by having another chat with the oncologist. Our team of cancer nurses are just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to talk things through with them as well.

I hope you're able to find out more soon and your mum's treatment continues to go well.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
