Had enough and want to stop kadcyla

Hello all

im at the year mark on my treatment journey - BC & nodes - triple positive. Now find myself hitting a wall. Have had Chemo / 6 blood transfusions/ lumpectomy - some active cells were then found in lymph node -so  radio and tamoxifen -a year of herceptin and have had TDM1  kadcyla - 7 rounds.

Thought I was doing well and we agreed that I seemed to tolerate the kadcyla to start with but last three have been horrendous. I’ve had terrible anxiety - palpitations and find that for about 4 days I can’t eat or hardly sleep...it’s a level of permanent anxiety that I’ve never known before. Then. A week  passes - I feel more like myself and by the third week I feel like totally back to normal. But these side effects are really shaking me up. I’m now starting to have panic attacks when I go to the cancer centre and physically want to pull the needle out of my hand and run out. I think I may be developing PTSD..symptoms.

so my dilemma is do I stop kadcyla ( will see onco soon but he has messaged me that I can stop) and live with the knowledge that I may be reducing my chances of survival. My instincts are to stop. It’s feels like my whole self is saying - enough of this poison.

my understanding is that her2 is very aggressive and  herceptin gives you a 77% chance of survival but kadcyla ups that to 88% . Obs I’d take the 88 over the 77 but I feel like I need to halt this as I feel myself unravelling. Maybe it’s the successive treatments building up? I don’t know.  I know I’ve come so far and don’t want to be beaten by this but....it’s a tough decision.

  • Hi @BeautifulLife

I'm interested to know what you decided and how you got on? I know your post is from 3 years ago, but I am in your boots right now and am an hour away from stopping Kadcyla altogether - I've only had 2.

After a double mastectomy for ER+, HER2+, stage 2 breast cancer, Kadcyla was sold to me like a 'light' chemo, but seems to have lingering side effects worse than the Docetaxel, Carboplatin and nab-Paclitaxel that I had 6 rounds of.

My mental health is in the gutter. I have never been like this in my life and am always the most positive problem solver in the room. Now, I get anxious and cry if I wrinkle the blanket on the bed - I am a mess. I have two small children to care for and live for, but if Kadcyla doesn't finish me off, I'm worried that my mental health might. I also cannot eat, much like you, and have lost over 2 stone since I started Kadcyla - weight that I can't afford to lose.

I hope you made the right choice for you and are doing well.

  • Hello

I have had five Kadcyla infusions and due a sixth on Wednesday, then eight more to go. I was sailing through up until a week ago when I started to experience tingling and burning sensation in my feet and lower legs, and a little in my finger tips and hands. I will of course mention this to oncology on Wednesday.

My worry is if I continue with Kadcyla the peripheral neuropathy will only get worse and can not be reversed or if I stop Kadcyla there is a higher risk of breast cancer returning.

Diagnosed last April 2024 with HER2 positive ER neg stage 2 grade 3 BC. Received 6 cycles of chemotherapy, lumpectomy and a second surgery as did not achieve a clear margin first time. Tumour had shrunk from 22mm to 12mm after chemotherapy. Received 5 rounds of radiotherapy and offered 14 Kadcylas.

I guess I will be guided by my oncologist. This wicked disease just keeps on taking my hopes and strength. I really think if I did not have 3 children I would stop any further treatment as I am totally exhausted both mentally and physically.

I will report back on Wednesday after appointment on my decision.

Typing this at 2am as not getting to sleep because of tingling burning feet.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
