Herceptin injection side effects insights

Hi all,

In April I was diagnosed with breast cancer E+ and HER2+  and have just finished my chemotherapy treatment. I had 6 cycles every 3 weeks of Docetaxel and Carboplatin alongside immunotherapy treatment herceptin which was given by an injection in my leg. I have suffered very badly with nausea and vomiting which got worse each cycle but was somewhat managed with medication. I still struggled a lot for at least 10 days after treatment with a range of symptoms.

I am due to to have just my herceptin injection now every 3 weeks and am wondering what other peoples experinces are in terms of side effects of having just the herceptin injection? I know everyone is different and i'm sure most of my sickness etc was a result of the chemotherapy but was curious about others experinces and the difference between just having herceptin on its own versus alongside the chemo?

  • I personally didn't have bloods before my herceptin. I expect it was the chemo you were reacting to rather than the herceptin. Rads is totally doable but it did wack me out as they slowly build up. I had 5 weeks worth so by the end it did get to me. I carried on working throughout but my job wasn't strenuous...what do you do? How many sessions of rads will you be having? X

  • I' wasn't sure because I've just got an oppointment for the jab not any bloods. I've got 4.5 weeks of radiotherapy because of her 2 and my age .I work in a care home for elderly dementia clients I do the activities there so not sure wether I could manage it are not but im seeing boss next week for a catch  shes lovely so maybe we could come to some arrange because ive been there 21 years an we get on so well still waiting for the breast nurse to call me back regarding bloods

  • I managed a care home at the time of my treatments and coped pretty well considering. I'm glad you have a good relationship with your boss, hopefully you'll be on light duties, it's towards the end of treatment that it may catch up with you...xx

  • Breast nurse just got back in touch no bloods before hand just the injection and she said the effects of herceptin aren't anything like chemo which is what you said .I love working in the care home I miss I so much

  • I'm glad the nurse got back to. Perhaps you can do a gradual return to work? I think being back at work will normalise life for you, mentally I feel it will do you the world of good...I hope you and your boss can work out a satisfactory solution...x
