THC and secondary breast cancer

Hello.

I have recently been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in my lungs and liver and have started medications. A friend has suggested trying THC oil so I bought some but I'm now worrying whether it will interfere with my treatment.

My consultant hasn't said don't take it but not be 'ripped off' by people, I think he has an open mind about it but my nurse said it can interfere with my meds.

Does anybody have any information they could share please?

I just want to keep going for as long as I can x

  • I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis but pleased that you are undergoing treatment.
With regards the use of Cannabis, there are plenty of unsafe and inaccurate websites which recommend or sell unlicensed cannabis products and it’s understandable that this can be extremely confusing. CBD oil comes from the flowers of the cannabis plant and does not contain the psychoactive substance THC. It can be sold in the UK as a food supplement but not as a medicine. There is no evidence to support its use as a medicine and no evidence to suggest it is in anyway a cure for cancer.

THC (Cannabis oil) however comes from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the cannabis plant. Cannabis oil often contains high levels of the psychoactive ingredient THC and for this reason Cannabis oil is classed as a class B drug and is illegal in the UK. You cannot buy this product from a licensed supplier.

It's completely understandable you want to do all you can but any alternative therapies being considered or used should really be discussed with a medical professional first. Not only is THC illegal, but because it’s unregulated these products might be contaminated with harmful substances and vary in strength. Taking cannabis oil could also potentially interfere with other cancer treatments and can carry other side effects and risks, so even if you are only taking CBD oil to help with symptoms, as your nurse has already said, it could interact with your conventional treatment.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to discuss this with them. Also The science blog on our website has more information about cannabis and cancer, but I hope this has helped to clarify things a little better and I wish you all the very best

  • Thank you and I've decided not to try it as I'm so worried about it interfering with my meds.x
