Concerned to have a seroma after Sentinel lymph node removal

Ten days ago l had surgery for sentinel lymph node removal and re-excision of lumpectomy as my cancer was classed as invasive. I now find myself with a seroma under the scar from the lymph node removal which has gradually got bigger and more painful. I saw my breast nurse a few days ago who said that if she drained it it would come back.  It is now a bit bigger and causing more discomfort.

I will most likely speak to her again about this. I would however like to know if anyone else has had this and how they dealt with it etc. Rather distresseed about this as l thought l was recovering well. I get my surgery results on Wednesday which will govern my cancer treatment.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Liz

  • Hi Liz

I'm really sorry to hear that you're dealing with a seroma following your lumpectomy. I know how uncomfortable this can be and it's good to hear that you've already been in touch with your BCN about the problem.

If you've not already spoken to her today then do give her a call to let her know that it's continued to get bigger and more uncomfortable. If it becomes red or hot to the touch then speak to your BCN, GP, or 111 as this can be signs of an infection.

I do hope that this settles soon and that the rest of your recovery goes smoothly.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Many thanks for getting back to me. I spoke to my BCN yesterday. Thankfully the discomfort has settled a bit and the swelling has not increased further. They will not drain it unless it get substantially larger.

Hopefully it will now slowly get reabsorbed with no further issues.

    Best wishes Liz

  • Hi Jenn,

I know this post was a long time ago but I’ve developed the same thing after my sentinel node biopsy. Did yours resolve eventually? Needing hope!

  • Hi edin

i had a Seroma I didn’t get it drained as like you say it’s not with it it will happen again

I let nature do it ltd thing I did have it for around 3 months mine used to sting more than anything but it will go after time lovely xx

anyway how are you feeling after the operstion ?  Did you have full auxiliary node clearance or just sentil node ?
    love Lara xx

  • Lovely to get a response from you, thank you! I had a sentinel node biopsy - 3 nodes were removed.

3 months is a long time but it is reassuring to know that it did go of its own accord. I’ve been putting some mild heat on and trying to gently massage - I’m being seen at the clinic tomorrow hopefully to get some reassurance on healing and what I can do. I want to avoid draining if I can.

It’s just frustrating to have so many side effects, isn’t it? It seems like such a minor surgery, as that is how ot is talked about but has quite a lot of impact. My shoulder blade area is still quite sore and tender but that seems so odd as it is so far from the incision site!

I am just so nervous about the D Day for results. 26th July….
