Breast radiotherapy after effects

Hi

I've had radiotherapy following a breast lump removal.
I spoke with others who'd had this treatment prior to beginning mine. They'd say things like:-

"it was a walk in the park"

"I had it in my lunch break and went back to work"

Anyway, I'm feeling sorry for myself. My ribs leading side to back are in constant niggling pain. I have to hold my breast to walk as any movement is like a razor blade slicing backwards and forwards. If I sit still with a bra on I still feel my back but this helps the breast pain, that's when I notice the numbness, the general soreness and then I awaken suddenly realising I've drifted off for 5 minutes.

I'm sure I'm not alone with my after effects and I wanted to share in case you're feeling like me and it hasn't been as easy as expected!

  • Hello Lg-recovery,

I am sorry to hear radiotherapy hasn't been a walk in the park for you and that you have suffered these difficult side effects. Sadly after effects will vary from one person to another and you might be interested in reading our page on radiotherapy for breast cancer and in particular this page on side effects of breast radiotherapy. Do talk to your breast nurse about these side effects as they may have some helpful suggestions for you to help you feel better.

Our cancer nurses are also just a free phone call away so don't hesitate to talk things through with them if you wish. You can call them on 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

As nothing replaces hearing from personal experiences, I will now let our other members who have suffered similar side effects after breast radiotherapy come and share their story with you.

Best of luck with the rest of your treatment! I hope it gets easier and that you find a way to minimize those side effects.
