Chemo and hair

Hi All,

I have posted here and there on the forums. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April. MRI found a second cancer lump in the same breast and CT found a third which I'm just assuming probably will be cancer. I also have lymph node involvement but no further spread. I had my first cycle of chemo on 20th May and next one is 10th June.

Before I started this I had waist length hair, I had it cut into a short bob and today finally shaved it (sort of). I donated my hair which made me feel better about cutting it.
I noticed some mild shedding the past week but on day 17, 5 th June the shedding got worse. This morning (day 18) I shed a lot of hair. My hairs quite thick so you couldn't really tell but I didn't want to cut my hair shorter when I felt *** after my next chemo. My breast nurse said the hair loss typically gets more significant  after the second cycle.

I actually feel quite relieved shaving my hair today. I'd cried a lot over doing it despite knowing it was coming. It's about 1cm long and my head no long has that weird feeling when the hair falls out. I can honesty said I feel good after doing it and I'd been dreading it. It feels like it's just out of the way now and I can prepare to be fabulous and bald lol. I've got a wig on order and plenty of nice hats.

I just wanted to share this in the hope in may be informative/help others going through the same thing.

  • Hi

I start chemo on Friday and know I will lose hair my consultant said It will start from first session then once I've had 2nd thats it.

I have short hair but have booked an appointment with my hairdresser to take it all off after my first session in preparation.

I don't fancy wearing a wig but have bought a few hats but it does feel daunting.

  • Hi.  I also struggled with the hair thing..  always had long hair but did what you did and cut it short before chemo started..   it's so scarey when it first starts to fall out...   I had really thick blond hair and I loved it..   really struggled when it fell out in handfuls...

However . Been through the chemo and it's now starting to grow back..   Lots of lovely thick (grey) hair however I am embracing the grey and looking forward to growing it again. .  Xxx
