Oxaliplatin side effects really struggling

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in March and had surgery in April they told me that I would need a bout of chemo which started on Friday I was given oxaliplatin intravenously which I had side-effects within half hour pain in my arm tingling in my fingers I finished the course which took about two hours by that time my vision had gone blurry, and I couldn't walk and I had hot flushes so they left me and I was able to leave the hospital after an hour in a wheelchair, later on that evening I took the tablet form(xelox) within two hours I'd had side-effects again and had to go to A&E oncologist on call advised not to take any more tablets until I spoke to my oncologist on Tuesday I passed out and fitted, severe diarrhoea and throwing up, so I'm now left with the side-effects of the oxaliplatin the tingling of the feet and hands and in my arms not able to drink anything remotely cold or eat anything cold I'm getting the sensation my throat is swelling, lock jaw and shocks every time eating something that isn't boiling hot, I cry and it's like I have electric shocks above my eyes and my nose and when It's 22° outside and I'm trying to quench my thirst I can see that I'm going to become dehydrated quite quickly already have a headache is there anything or anyone that can help

  • Welcome to the community Tezler although I'm very sorry about the reaction you've had and the side effects you're experiencing.

I hope this information we have about oxaliplatin and tips we have for managing side effects of cancer drugs will prove useful but if you find yourself in need of any medical assistance or advice before Tuesday do be sure to get in touch with your medical team (if they're available over the bank holiday weekend and you have contact numbers for them), advice line or the NHS on their 111 service.

Hopefully some of our members who have experience of taking Oxaliplatin will be along soon to offer their support and advice as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Tezler,

I had oxaliplatin a number of years ago, I had terrible side effects, firstly after the first dose I had to rush to the toilet and had a feeling of sickness. When I got over that and came back from the toilet, I had no peripheral vision, this passed after 30 mins or so, but they were concerned and I had checks done on me before I left the hospital. They warned me of tingling hands, feet etc, I wasn't able to wash my hands in luke warm water, wasn't able to go into the fridge or freezer due to the tingling. I bought myself some fleece gloves to wear. I wasn't able to sit on a toilet seat without the backs of my legs tingling so I bought toilet seat covers (bliss one of the best things I bought). I also suffered in the cold weather (I had my treatment January to July). It wasn't good as the tips of my nose, ears, fingers and toes tingled, in the cold weather when I went out, my face even felt it froze after going into a warm shop from the cold. Not a good look.

my second treatment they reduced the dosage but I never got over the tingling in the extremities of my hands, feet and face. They said it wouldn't last long but it did, there was no real relief between doses. I on,y had 5 out of 8 sessions as they said I had probably had plenty of it and were concerned about nerve damage(which I still suffer in my feet and not sure if I sometimes feel it in my hands and face on very cold days)

I also had trouble with taste, a lot of what I liked tasted awful, I persevered with this but made sure I had lots of small things around to eat to give me a different taste in my mouth, suffice to say I haven't eaten some of the stuff I had to this day.

were you not given any anti sickness tablets? I was but never needed them and am afraid diarrhoea is a common symptom, but should get better in time.

not sure if this helps, but I wish you well in your treatment. It's nearly 6 years since I had my treatment but it never leaves you.
