Lung Cancer, Diagnosis, Treatment and then . . waiting

I was diagnosed with lung cancer late October 2020 and received 5 sessions of SABR radiotherapy which finished at the end of January this year.  After 3 months I had another scan and the tumour had shrunk by approx a third.  Oncology seemed to think this was good news but I had assumed that it would have gone (or not).  I now have another scan and Oncology appointment in September (4 months time).  I am finding this waiting very traumatic, in fact I have had 2 stress-induced heart attacks.  I keep thinking that since the tumour had not gone 3 months after treatment it will now just start to grow or spread over the current 4 month further wait.  Is this just me being negative?  Is there any possibility of further reduction of the tumour?  Has anyone been in a similar situation or is able to reassure me?

  • Hello Ruby_E

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you're finding things so worrying at the moment. It's good to hear that the SABR had an impact on the tumour and that the Oncologist was happy with the results.

It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about waiting for the next scan and I know that many people find it helpful to talk things through at times like this. I wonder if you'd find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be able to give you some advice, information and support to help you through the next few months. If you'd like to chat with them they're back in the office after the bank holiday on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

    Best wishes,
