So angry about diagnosis delay!

I want to post here as different things keep going around in my head and I need to get it off my chest.

In May 2020 my mum went to the GP as she noticed a new lump in the top of her leg. Mum told the Dr that she had a cancerous growth removed from the same leg 37 years ago and asked if the new lump could  be a reoccurence of the cancer. The GP said no it's not possible. Mum said she was worried so he referred her for an ultrasound with a few weeks wait.

Mum waited about four weeks for the ultrasound and when she attended, the sonographer advised her ( without consulting a Dr or anyone else) that the lump was a cyst and asked if she'd tried popping it?!

A report was then sent back the GP stating it was a cyst. Mum advised she was still worried,so the GP and a nurse looked at the lump and told her it couldn't be cancer!!

Mum was then referred to Haematology and the Dr she saw again advised it wouldn't be cancer without organising a biopsy. She then saw a different Dr a few weeks later who ordered a biopsy. It was then a three week wait for the biopsy.

The results of the biopsy took a week and mum was told it was a reoccurence of the same type of cancer that she had 37 years ago,as she originally suspected.

Mum had major surgery to remove the lymph nodes around the lump, but the cancer has spread.

Mum now has incurable cancer and has about 18 months to live while taking targeted therapy drugs.

My emotions range from being devastated to being SO angry with the NHS,why the hell wasn't she put on a two week referral pathway when she first attended the GP with the lump?!!

Mum has complained to the hospital, but got nowhere.

I've just had a baby eight months ago and we are all going to be left without Granny/ mum because of people's incompetence.

  • That is a terrible situation.  I hate the way doctors play everything down and make people feel like they are worrying over nothing.  I really feel for you and your Mum.  We really need to start holding these doctors to account otherwise this will never end - my Mum had a similar experience with colon cancer and even when she was diagnosed they made mistakes in her treatment plan and it all changed - this made her loose all hope
