Breast cancer and alcohol

Just wondering if you all gave up alcohol after diagnosis or were advised to I enjoy a glass of wine at the weekend but worried I am doing myself damage

  • Hi, I'm wondering the same thing.Ive been diagnosed in Jan and starting chemo on 27th April. I've  still enjoyed my wine.I hasn't  been told to abstain tho I'm sure the taste for it will disappear soon. Not a bad thing.

  • Hi,

I can't remember being told not to drink alcohol, I am not a big drinker anyway so going without alcohol would not have been an issue, but I was diagnosed in Aug 2020 and I have continued to enjoy a drink as and when I choose to, I am in my 40's so it is not as if I am out every weekend pubbing and clubbing it.

I have a couple of Vodka and redbulls about once a week or once a fortnight. I think it is really upto you what you do. WHat you feel is best to go along with your treatment plan.

  • Sorry to burst your bubble but after 6 months  of treatment for renal cancer and I did like a drink in the past ,even after a glass of wine or a beer ,it makes me feel like crap and can't sleep ,and now I'm on a cocktail of painkillers ,alcohol has become out of the question ,try a  tall glass of tonic with ice and lemon ,dip the rim of the glass in a saucer of gin first ,its nearly there and you don't feel out of it ,that's if you get out or have company outside

    Hi Scousebrain,

I am sorry to hear about your experience with alcohol. It seems to depend on the type of cancer you have and what treatment you are undergoing. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and I was advised that I could take a glass of wine once a week, provided that I didn't overdo things - there were times that I enjoyed this and times that I couldn't even look at it.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I spoke with my oncologist about this and she advised not an issue providing it's in moderation and not the day before or day of chemo.  I've only felt like it a few times since starting treatment, so I sort of think the body self regulates
