Pain after lumpectomy and SLN biopsy

Hi all,

This has been such a useful forum to read! I had the op at the end of March and get my results tomorrow. Like everyone here, I have been surprised by the pain and its persistence. The worst bit was pain over the lymph node removal as I could not find any bra that didn't have a side seam right over the scar. As the scar is horizontal, that's not surprising really. I shall ask the surgeon at my follow up tomorrow why they don't do a vertical scar.

I spent hours researching bras online but then spoke to a friend who had the op some years ago and she recommended a company called Nicola Jane. O rang them and they make wonderful soft bras that have NO seams, they are like spongy crop tops with a built in soft yet supportive bras. They are expensive at £24 each but you can claim an exemption from VAT and they send you the form

I am in my 3rd week and both the armpit still hurts a bit though the feeling is coming back. Pain does spread to the arm in various places. The scar on my breast is raised and hard, this has never happened to any other scars but moisturising will help I am sure.

I wanted to share about the bras. I am taking the brochure about Nicola Jane to the hospital tomorrow as all they could recommend were crop tops ( not enough support) or not underwired bras ( seams press right on the scar) .I had tried putting padding etc but nothing had helped.

Meantime, paracetamol helps though I am not keen on pills and exercises are fine. Rest is the answer for me, again not my sort of thing. Positive mental attitude and good bras are the way forward!

  • Hi [@Postopgirl]‍

    Here here to the pain!!

I was not expecting the pain to be as bad as it was - I had spoken to someone through the someone like me site and she went through the same surgery as me and had said she was up and about a week after and doing normal activity - I thought there was something wrong with me as three weeks after surgery I was still in so much pain and living on painkillers - I don't generally like taking tablets either but had to for this.

As for the bra I purchased one through the breast clinic - They had a little room at the clinic filled with various bras and was fitted properly for one - first ever time to be fitted - thankfully it turns out I had been wearing the correct size for years!! It cost £15 I think or £12... not sure now - But it fitted great didn't come near the scar from lymph node removal, I was so pleased that I invested in one as I know none of my existing bras would have been good.

I am now 7 months post op, although the scars have now healed nicely and the numbness in my upper breast has now gone - I had the feeling come back in my nipple quickly, but for months I still felt the top of my breast was numb - now I get pain and twinges and some burning etc occasionally but told this is something that happens as things move back into place and recover from the surgery.

    Good Luck for your results...

  • Hi,

So glad you're getting better. This op is a much bigger deal for some of us, obviously!

There's nothing much available in the breast clinic or through the McMillan nurses where I live, I suspect it's the usual excuse of Covid. But life is like that right now. Indeed I spoke the the McM nurse after the opearation and was told to go to see the nurse at my GP....

Anyway, very glad you're improving and so am I. I really just wanted to pass on the info about Nicola Jane as no info was available where I live

good luck wih your recovery, hope all he feeling comes back
