Mastectomy... can I insist?

Hi everyone!

I have triple positive IDC Stage 3 and have my 5th of 6 TCHP cycles this week.... just one more to go... yay! I then have a consultation with my surgeon about my op. I have very cystic boobs which prevented me from spotting my tumour earlier. It was 38mm at initial scans but has shrunk to 17mm after 3 cycles... awesome! BUT I am really worried they will only offer a lumpectomy on the side with the tumour. The surgeon has already said they won't under treat but neither will they overtreat. I have around 6 cysts in the opposite side that to me all feel the same as the tumour did and around four in the cancer side. I had a cyst drained in the same place as the tumour just the year before and the tumour didn't show on the mammogram despite it's size, just the ultrasound spotted it. I feel the constant worry of whether the lumps are cancer will drive me insane!!! I have BUPA cancer care insurance and am being treated at the local NHS hospital along with the local private hospital.

What I want to know is has anyone successfully requested double mastectomy even if recommended lumpectomy? If so do you have any advice?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

  • I was initially found to have a 7mm invasive ductal cell carcinoma. At that stage I said i wanted a mastectomy and I didn't get any resistance from my consultant. I explained I have severe anxiety and would myself stupid of more cancers growing. Over the following few weeks further tests revealed 3 lumps in total so the mastectomy became their choice too. Once I realised I had 3 lumps and that one of them was 20cms I asked for a double mastectomy. Again I was asked my rationale.  After a detailed conversation with a a couple of different people they agreed to do the double mastectomy. I had it about 2 weeks ago. I have no regrets.
