Pain nearly a year on

I had a lumpectomy last June followed by radiotherapy for 5 days in August. I was recovering well until about a month ago when I started to get shooting pains in my treated breast. Then I got pain in my rib and under my arm. There's a bit of swelling there but I don't think it's full- blown lymphedema. Anyone had anything similar so long after treatment and was it temporary? Thanks

  • Hi [@Erasmusbee]‍

I can't answer your question completely, but seem to be following a similar path to you, I had a lumpectomy in September 2020 - I decided to refuse radiotherapy. My recovery after surgery was slow and was only able to look after myself three weeks after surgery, I had a lot of numbness in my breast for months so when it did start coming back I started to get shooting pains, the muscle and nerves moving and settling back into place, back in February I went back to the breast clinic as the pain had become so severe and a swelling in my breast although away from the surgery site it was still in the same breast.

Due to going through this I think we are on more of a high alert of things going on and changes. So it will be interesting to see what others do say as I would also like to hear from anyone that had this and whether it was a temporary or permanent fixture.

Hello I had lumpectomy on 16th June 2020,had 8 sessions of chemotherapy whuch finished on 14th December 2020 and 15 sessions of radiotherapy which recently finished on the 30th March 2021. I have also got lymphedema in my right hand, wrist and arm ,as it was my right breast that had the cancer ,which spread to my lymph nodes  and all nodes were removed from under my right arm.

My breast is very painfull ,swollen a bit, vety tender and still red from radiotherapy.  I'm also having pain now in my right shoulder, even though the underarm and bsck of my shoulder is still numb to the touch,as is the top part  (underneath)  of  my arm going down. I think its all the nerve endings ,and muscles causing us the pain, as I to do get sharp shooting pains, in my right breast, and my nipple is painful too. I think we are to hard on ourselves sometimes ,and we need to give our body's more time to heal.  After all our body's have been through such a lot if trauma. Obviously if mine gets any worse, I will see my breast care nurses or doctor. But hopefully in a few months time, it will improve.

Hope yours does to,but if the pain is so bad you can't handle it,seek advice as soon as you can. Wish you bitter soon.x
