Mum diagnosed with bowel cancer: palliative care

Hi everyone,

Firstly just want to say - I'm sorry for anyone who needs to turn to these chats for support, no-one should have to suffer with cancer & it’s so scary that it's happening to so many people ️
My mum has recently (2months ago) found out that she has bowel cancer, which has spread to her liver & various parts of her body, the doctors have said that the tumours have done irreparable damage & they can't remove it. My mum has had her 1st dose of chemo, but they have mentioned palliative care - I'm very much new to all this, does anyone know if they are expecting the chemo to shrink the tumour or is it just something to try and stop the tumour from growing & that it really won't do much else?
I understand that this subject may be difficult for some people & but I really would welcome any advice offered. Thank you xx

  • A warm welcome to Cancer Chat, wags-k-88!

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. It must have been a bit of a shock to learn that the cancer has spread to her liver and other parts of her body and that the tumours can't be removed surgically. You might be interested in reading the information on our website on advanced bowel cancer which I hope will answer some of the questions you might have about your mum's diagnosis.

I hope that your mum reacted well to her first dose of chemotherapy. Palliative treatment is usually offered to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life as you can read on this page on our website about palliative care. Do give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be able to tell you in more detail what palliative treatment might involve in your mum's case and your mum's medical team will I am sure give you all the specifics.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our forum who have also looked after a loved one with cancer and who have also been in a similar position having to support someone receiving palliative care. I hope you won't mind but I will add the words 'palliative care' to the title of your post. This will hopefully help you get more relevant replies to your thread.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
