Tamoxifen

Hi I was diagnosed with breast  cancer in February 2015 had lumpectomy all went well , found out I was Her2 positive I had chemotherapy, Herceptin and Radiotherapy to then start my Tamoxifen in  December 2015 had some hot flushes and achy bones but nothing I couldn't cope with my oncologist said I would probably be on for 10 years as he left I had a lovely lady oncologist she sent me for bloods which indicated I was post menopausal so she was happy for me to stop my Tamoxifen or I could try letrozole for a couple of years but the decision is up to me she said,, what do I do it's causing me great anxiety I just want to do what's best for my body!
Any advice would be great julie x

    Hi Julie,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am glad to hear that you have done so well with all of your treatment. The question you ask is one that is impossible for any of us to guide you with. There are so many different factors which influence a decision like this, such as your type and grade of cancer, whether or not there was any lymph node involvment, any family history of cancer, your age, your general health, etc.

I can fully understand that you want to do what is likely to be best for your body, but the person who has most of your facts to hand to make this decision is your oncologist. Have another chat with her and ask what she would advise if you were a member of her family. You will find it helpful to write down a list of any questions before you speak to her.

I sincerely hope that you can eventually reach a decision which is the right one for you, but as (I presume) you are not a cancer expert, I would leave this to the professionals who are responsible for your care.

Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi jolamine,

Thank-you so much for your response, it is so hard to make a decision, I  have read after taking tamoxifen for 5 years it  has a 0.2 percent benefit if you weigh the side effects up is it worth it ? my tumour was a grade 2 and I had 2 lymph nodes taken out they were all clear it would of been just radiotherapy but because of the her 2 positive I had to have chemotherapy and herceptin I'm very healthy otherwise , I have a telephone call with my oncologist in the next few weeks so hopefully she will guide me a bit better,

Thankyou so much and hope you are well

    Kind Regards

    Hi Julie,

I am glad to hear that you are very healthy apart from this. Do you know what type of breast cancer you had? Letrozole did give me a lot more trouble with my bones and joints than Tamoxifen did, but this is normal. I took this for 6½ years, before finishing in 2017.

Draw up a list of your concerns and discuss these with your oncologist, then be led by her advice.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi

Just had an oncology appointment today as I stoped taking Letrozole for two month. They gave me terrible aches and pains in my body, mainly my legs. Some people are more affecte by this than others so it’s really a matter of trying out what is best for you.

My oncologist recommended trying Tamoxifen instead which I will start from tomorrow.

    kind regards

    Cilly
