Stage 4 cancer

Hello. My partner in his 50s has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 rectal cancer which has spread through the wall of the bowel and is impacting other organs. It is also in the lymph nodes and the lungs. We are told it is inoperable but that he will begin chemo for 3-6 months to try to control/shrink back the cancer with a slight chance they will be able to remove it surgically afterwards.

I want to hear from anyone/family member of anyone who is going through similar. I'm looking for hope, we have two young children x

  • Thank you Sadia.

Trying to stay positive and believe he can come through it. I want my children to grow up with their daddy!

Best wishes to you and your mum too. It's a tough time but one where you realise how strong you are too.

  • I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer 19 months ago and I can honestly say I'm feeling great. My last CT scan showed the cancer in my kidney has stabilised but the cancer is developing in my lungs. I am now about to start a clinical trial and it has given me great hope and makes me feel positive. I'm hoping I continue feeling well and live for years to come. Having a positive attitude definitely helps and I believe it can make all the difference.

  • Hey,

Thank you so much for your reply. It is really encouraging when I see other people who have been diagnosed for quite for sometime and are doing okay, despite it being stage 4 cancer. So happy to hear that the kidney in your cancer has stabilised- that's amazing news. I'm wishing you all the best with your clinical trial.
    Remain positive, and keep fighting!

Let us know how you get on.
Wishing you all the best, you're in my prayers.

    Kind Regards,

    Sadia

  • I too have stage 4 kidney cancer . I was diagnosed 19 months ago. The large tumour shrunk by 30% with immunotherapy but the treatment made me so ill I had to stop. Now I take targeted chemo tablets but only a low dose. The cancer has stabilised in the kidney but spread to my lungs so hoping to start clinical trial soon to control the cancer in my lungs. I did think I was dying but lately feel so well it's made me think more positively. I think age is on my side too, I'm 48.

  • I have stage 4 with a poor prognosis. Two years ago I was told I might have 12-24 months with treatment. I've now had every treatment going and my tumours are slowly growing with targeted pills. I expect to be taken off the pills sometime soon and I guess it's then just a matter of time. I'm hoping to get one or two holidays in between lockdown being lifted and the grim reaper calling my name .
Covid coming along just as my life gets shortened is such a bad hand to be dealt! Not a good time to have cancer, if there is ever a good one!

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply. You sound so upbeat and positive it’s impossible not to have your spirits raised.

I wish you continuing positivity and health health on your journey!

  • Covid certainly adds an unwelcome dimension to all this. I hope you are able to get those holidays and just enjoy life. Stay positive x

  • Thank you. I'm certainly going to give the holidays my best shot! The docs regard me as a bit weird when I tell them my plans, but while there's breath in my body .......

good luck with your journey too
