Exercise after surgery

Hi everyone,

I had an axillary clearance and wide local excision on the 15th for a grade 3 her2- er+ breast cancer. I went in with swollen lymph nodes on Jan 3rd but they haven't found the primary, just some DCIS, so I'm a bit of a mystery lady. I'm mad curious to see the pathology results from my surgery.

Sorry, I went a bit off track there

I just want to know how soon are y'all getting back to exercise after surgery. I managed a 4km walk today. I felt fine during the walk but a lot of nerve pain tonight and generally feeling lousy. I'm never very good at knowing when I'm under or overdoing it, so I just want to know what other people's experiences are.

I'm usually a fairly active person. I have a busy job and I walk 5kms almost every day and jog/walk it a couple of times a week.

All the best for now,

  • Hi Hayleycomet,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I hope you're getting on OK with everything and that you're able to find out more soon about what's going on.

I just wanted to send you a reply to help boost your post so more people will see it, and hopefully you'll receive more replies.

Do of course discuss this with your doctor or specialist if you can too, if you're unsure about whether you're doing the right things. Our nurses are also available on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5 - if you'd like to have a chat.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Hayley,

I]'ve had 5 ops, and I could usually go out and be active really soon after each one - I used to try and go out every day even with a drain bottle in!  Running was much harder though, and after radiotherapy and chemotherapy the achey legs and joints took weeks to get better.  I'm back up to 10km runs now, but it's still really hard...

But...  every week it gets easier

  • Thanks Jon, that's really encouraging. That's cool that you were up and at 'em quickly after surgery...

I'm a bit nervous about resuming running because of the impact, so I'll stick with the walking. I'm also gonna do short HIIT sessions on the stationary bike. I need to get some more advoce about progressive weight training....

  • Yeah, all that bouncing around doesn't sound fun!  I used to do tabata on the bike - that's incredible exercise.  If you feel up to it, why not?

I asked doctors about weights, but nobody wanted to give me any 'official' advice, so I just did what I was comfortable with.  I've got a barbell in the garage and try and do big compound lifts whenever I can.  The first time felt like my going was going to split, but it didn't...
