Mastectomy - post surgery

Hello everyone,

just wondering did anyone have post surgery pain. It's been nearly two weeks since my right breast mascetomy. I am still sore but it's the nerve pain - prickling, sensitive to touch, sometimes sharp shooting pain that lasts a second. It's with me 24/7. It feels like a bad case of shingles pain.

I wonder if anyone had these sensations and how long did your symptoms lasts. 2 weeks I am kind of worried. I know they say it's part of healing...

doctors are great quick to discuss treatment and op procedures but no one has spoken about post surgery except take painkillers and wait it out ...:(  I like to know stuff like what's causing the pain etc, why do have pain, etc

What kind of things did you do to alleviate the pain besides painkillers. I have been given opioids but don't want to take them because they give me side effects.

thanks everyone :) keep going.

  • Hello Lilly-me

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing some pain following your recent mastectomy. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned but do try to keep in mind that it is still very early days and there will be some changes as you heal.

There's an article here on the Breast Cancer Now website that has some advice and tips about managing pain after breast surgery that you may find helpful.

I'd also suggest giving our team of nurses a call to talk things through with them. I'm sure they will be able to give you some advice and support and may raise some points that you want to talk to your breast care nurse or Consultant about. If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I do hope that things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi lily

I had lumpectomy and full node clearance 4 weeks ago now , I know not a masectomy but I'm still getting pain like stabbing and or shooting in both armpit and breast.

I also have numbness but can feel like a prickling Sensation in my arm, it is getting better but still there

Psin killers helped but like you I didn't want to take them all the time.

I bought myself a wheat bag and found the heat from this helped

Hole you start to feel better soon

    regards

  • Hello Bella,

Thank you for your lovely response. Sorry to hear you are still in pain after 4 weeks :(. Sending you massive positive vibes :). I love your suggestion about warm wheat bags. I I am going to try that :). Sorry I have not got much of a suggestion I am in pain 24/7 like you different sensations from dull ache, tightness, tingling,  shooting pains that lasts nano-seconds. I probably felt every sensation under the sun haha. I am having more soaks in the bath using Epsom salt. Don't know if it does anything though :).

I am due in for clinic next week so maybe I can find out some more info. I don't know why some patients get more pain than others - maybe it's the way the surgery / cut is made?!
Maybe our medicine is patience (which I admit I don't have. Just want to get back to normal without "wincing" around x

happy healing to you x x
