Psi oesophagectomy cough

Hi,

Anyone out there any info?
My husband is 7 weeks post oesophagectomy (for oesophageal cancer) he has/is recovering really well. Starts more chemo next week ):

BUT

He has a horrendous dry cough. Defo not Covid! Been checked for chest/lung trouble= chest clear. Even good old remedies don't work like codine, vicks . Dr gave him salbutamol- you guessed it- no effect!
Eating fine , cough no worse or better after food or drink

The only thing that gives him any sort of relief is hot water/ humidifier thingy.

it is driving me, and him mad!
Any info and advice would be most welcome

  • Hi new to this sight. Had cardio oesphagectomy 7 weeks ago. Had FLOT pre surgery with good response, was T2 but pathogy scored T0. Starting FLOT again next week, precaution... Not looking forward to it this time as know what to expect but never mind only 4 cycles.

Main problem at moment is dry cough, annoying but seens from what I have read on here seems fairly normal.

I found eating difficult. Spent years watching weight and now being told to graze, 6 small meals/snacks per day! Have lost weight but do feel better for it.

Difficult journey but best wishes to all x

  • Hi I am 7 weeks post surgery. Had 1cm tumour lower gullet. They removed have oesphagus and reconstructed stomach into tube to join to lower oesphagus which now sits above diaphragm. Feels bit weird. No storage of food so just goes straight to small intestine to digest. Need smaller meals, 6meals/snacks per day, chew well.

Was hoping to have keyhole but slightly tricky and had to do transverse upper abdo incision and right chest wall to get access. Wound healed well, staples out after 2 weeks

    Best wishes

  • Hi Preston,

It sounds very positive that your tumour shrank so much from FLOT and you've had the mahusive op! Your op sounds slightly different to what my husband and some others have had done. My husbands tumour was junctional so half of the oesophagus and the top third of the stomach removed. However same pre op - post op FLOT. He did find the post op FLOT more difficult. He had a few serious complications develop a week after the op but came through them. There is another thread under oesophagus cancer diagnosis. Hilts is on this site and her husband has a cough.

There a variety of people patients or concerned family members and it's a very honest but supportive group. You can chose to go through the thread ( it is pretty long lol) or not. Hope this helps.

    keeping the faith
