Suspected Lymphedema

Hello im experiencing swelling and pain in my right arm right down to my wrist and hand. My right side measures 2 inches bigger than my left. I called my doctor on Monday and had to wait till Wed morning for them to call me, as  the receptionist said 'they are not allowed to book appointments the doctor has to call and assess if you need to be seen or not.' So wed I got the call, and was seen later that day at 4.30pmby a doctor . The doctor measured my right arm and wrist ,and said it may be a clot, or it could be lymphedema or Auxiliary node rope like scaring, but she wasn't sure and not very keyed up with Cancer patients ( her words not mine ) she was concerned and called A&E to try to speak to a registrar doctor, but after getting through and waitung 20 mins for the person who answered ,to put a doctor on the phone to speak to my doctor ,my doctor had to hang up as she had other patients to see. She prescribed me pain killers and asked me to call my breast cancer nurse at the breast clinic in the morning, she also said "if I had a email to send pictures to my breadt cancer nurse'". I did that early the next morning  and called when thry were open, but they didn't pick up,so I left a message asking thrm.to call me back. I got a call back in the afternoon to say my cancer nurse was not in that day,and could I send the pictures again to the other nurse who i had just spoken to ,she gave me her email address.  So I did,and she called me back and said it looks like Lymphedema, and that my cancer nurse actually runs the Lymphedema clinic.but because of covid they were not seeing any Lymphedema patients.  But she said ill get your cancer nurse to call you tomorrow.  I waited till 3.20pm,and I called again, but no one answered so I left a message asking to call me back, no one did,and thry are closed at the weekend.

Ive found Lymphedema excersises on you tube, and ive been doing them, but I havent been  properly diognosed  and just need to be seen really to get some proper help, but because of covid I dont think that will happen. I dont want my right arm to get any bigger ,as ive seen pictures online and some people end up with arms like elephants, and its allreafy very painfull ,ecspecialy when I raise my arm.My oncologist is due to call ne this Monday morning  as the  breast nurse who i spoke to  asked him to call me,as I had also.told her I was waiting to have Radiotherapy and my last chemotherapy was on 14th December and I had not heard anything about it and because of my swelling in my arm I was concerned if it would make it worse  and needed to speak to him about not wanting tattoo dots.  Has anyone else got Lymphedema and if so is it manageable and under control.

  • Hi Jassoscared,

I'm sorry to read of the issues you've been experiencing - it sounds like it's been difficult to get answers about this. You mention you were due to speak to your specialist today, so hopefully you've been able to do that now and to ask any questions you may have.

I hope you're able to find out more about all this soon and that it eases a little for you.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
