Can stress affect my recovery?

I have CNS Lymphoma and receiving treatment. The street I live on has recently became popular with drinkers and light drug users with trouble regularly spilling into street. Can stress affect my recovery? As my cancer is cerebral I do get concerned when I get a lot of headaches.

  • Hello Jarrowlad,

absolutely stress can have a massive impact upon your health and any subsequent recovery from problems. It can act as a disruptor to your bodies normal defence systems and lowers your ability to guard against infections and syndromes.. l had a career in large scale pig breeding, and had the opportunity to work on sites with individual animals housed running into several thousands, and pigs physyology in many ways mimics closely that of humans. If the animals were placed under stress by their living conditions, mass illness soon followed, whereas the reverse was true, and a happy pig was a healthy pig, well able to shrug away any challenges it encountered during its life. The evidence for this was dramatically shown by the exceedingly low dependence on drugs administered for health problems, and on the units l managed no need whatsoever of constant infeed medication to damp down any inherant problems bought about by bad management. l firmly believe that in a lot of instances stress will do more damage than the original problem you worry about, and certainly will have a huge impact on your ability to enjoy a quick and successful recovery.

l hope you treatment goes well and that your circumstances do not increase the pressure you place upon yourself,
