Tips for starting treatment

Hi everyone. I start my chemo treatment on 7th for breast cancer. I was wondering if you all have any tips on anything I should have ready in preparation? Any particular skin care/ foods/ comfort items?

My consultant mentioned using a cooling cap however the nurses at the Macmillan unit weren't very positive about it and tried to put me off it. I'm not sure what to do. I have short hair and I don't hold much hope of getting a wig that suits me. I'm also not sure if the places to get wigs will even be open in Scotland just now. I'm 35.

I also don't have a dentist. I've never ever had bother with my teeth and I last went to the dentist 5 years ago. I tried to get an appointment a few weeks ago only to be told that they were only dealing with emergencies. Should I keep trying to get an appointment? It's the worst time of year to get appointments at the best of times.

    Hi Rose,

Plenty of reading material will be helpful. You will be advised about the best creams, anti-nausea, anti-constipation/diarrhoea medication, etc, to use by the clinic. You will also need to drink plenty of water. Accept all the help you can at home, as you are likely be too tired to cope with day to day cleaning, cooking, etc.

I haven't had the cold cap myself, but understand that it doesn't always prevent the hair from falling out. It is always worth a try though. That way you can always satisfy yourself that you attempted to save it.

It is certainly well worth trying to get a dental appointment prior to having chemo. If you cannot get one, why not contact your breast care nurse and see if the hospital has a dental facility that could see you? She should also be able to tell you the situation in Scotland with regard to getting a wig.

I hope that all goes well with your treatment. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx
