Feeding

Hello,

My Dad is having radiotherapy for tounge and throat cancer. He's started to use the feeding tube but is finding it difficult to put many shakes through as he's getting full up very quickly.

He's now started to lose a lot of weight because he's not getting the calories in. Does anyone know of any shakes that are higher in calories but can be taken in smaller amounts please?

Thank you x

    Hi Janda1janda,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad's weight loss. There are various build up drinks (such as Ensure) and puddings available for someone like your dad. Talk to his GP or nurse, as they should be able to get these for him on prescription. There are a number of different makes and flavours, so be prepared to try a few before you find something that he likes.

I hope that these help him backto health soon.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much for your swift reply. He is taking ensure at the moment but finds it difficult to take a whole bottle, he's just getting too full.

I will ask Dad to talk to the nurses again and see if there's anything else on offer. On the plus side he's using feeding tube so doesn't matter what it tastes like.

    Thank you once again xx

We had to dilute the Ensure with milk so that my mother-in-law could take it. She lived on one third of a bottle three times a day for nearly 2 years.

If the nurses can't help, ask to see a Dietician.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Dad is mixing it with a little water as he finds it too thick to push through the tube. I just worry because this is his only source of calories and he's only consuming 400 a day if that.

It's tough because he says he's so full up after just half a small bottle of ensure so don't know what else we can do. The nurses have given him bigger bottles with more calories in but he's still unable to take the amount they recommend.

Hope your mother-in-law is better now x

    Hi there,

Ask to speak to a Dietician and see if they can suggest anything that might suit your dad better.

Sadly, we lost my Mum-in-law a year past in September after a six year illness.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
