My dad is dying from prostrate cancer

Hi, I posted a while ago,

My dad was diagnosed with prostrate cancer back in December,he had cancer in both shoulders, pelvis, spine, bones, legs swelling, prostrate, he was having radiology and hormone treatment but none of them are working now,  my mum had a call from hospital today to say that his cancer has spread to his glands, palliative care are going to assess him and are involved early to help with his pain relief, he's facing I've frequent, has to wear pants as he can't hold his urine, he sweats loads, has had to have a hospital bed instead of a normal single so it's easier for my mum to help him, he also now has to have an electric chair in lounge as he can't get out of a normal chair, he has walking sticks a zimmer frame and a wheelchair for when he's outside,

I'm worried about how much longer he has left, can anyone help please, thank you

  • Hello michelle-83,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and that his treatment is no longer working and the cancer has spread. It must be hard for you and your mum to have to watch your dad go through this and to see him gradually lose his mobility. There is information on our website on this page on advanced prostate cancer which might be of interest to you. Unfortunately, it is really hard for anyone to give you an indication of prognosis as no one can really predict accurately how much longer your dad has left. But you could try and get a sense of what to expect in the coming weeks and months by talking to his medical team who will know the details of his diagnosis and medical background and who I am sure will have some useful information to give you on this.

If you ever felt the need to talk to our cancer nurses, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will hear from some of our members who have also looked after a loved one with prostate cancer or who have prostate cancer themselves and that they will share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
