DIARRHOEA AFTER CAPECITABINE (FOR COLON CANCER)

Hello all,
My mother had an operation for colon cancer 4 months' ago and is presently mid way through a six month course of capecitabine chemo tablets.
She is on a "14 day course/one week off" cycle of these tablets

She is refusing to discuss it with me but she's clearly suffering from sporadic diarrhoea. today she had it a few times, but hasn't taken the capecitabine tablets for 5 days (she's presently on the "one week off" part of the cycle)

I note that a side effect of the capecitabine tablets can be diarrhoea

*** However is it possible/likely that the diarrhoea is a side effect of those tablets, even thought she's not taken them

for five days?

I'm so very worried it is something more sinister and I can't talk to anyone bcos my mother won't let me

Thank you for any information

  • Hi there, the chemo nurses can provide loperamide tablets to help with this along with anti-nausea tabs, you could check that your mum is telling the team that she is suffering, it could lead to dehydration.
The capecitabine gets turned into flourouricil in the body (5Fu) and this acts on all fast dividing/replicating cells - on the cancer cells but also those in the digestive tract from the mouth all the way down to the anus. The effects can get worse as the treatment progresses - fortunately these side effects can be managed easily, I saw them as a sign that the chemo was doing its thing and destroying those nasty cancer calls. There are also numbing creams that can help with any soreness on the bottom - germoloid cream is a good one. This is a very good forum but I recommend that you and your mum join the Bowel Cancer UK forum, there are a lot of info leaflets about treatments, what to expect, questions to ask etc. There are colorectal specialist nurses you can ask for info and a it is a safe and supportive place xx
It also has a private section for relatives/friends xxx
