Mouth still sore 6 weeks after radiotherapy

Hi Guys

Just wondered if anyone could give me and my husband some advice.

He is into his sixth week after a six week course of radiotherapy for tonsil and neck cancer and his mouth is still ulcerated, he said it is like having wasps in his mouth.

He thought this would be calming down by now he has been trying to get off the ensure drinks and eat but everything irritates it.

Did any of you experience this and how long before it gets better. He thought maybe he has thrush but it doesn't look like white patches. By the way he didn't have a feeding tube.

Any info would help.

Love to you all out there.

  • Hi there.

So so sorry to hear of your husbands diagnosis and the problems he is having.

Could I ask of his symptoms as I’m currently waiting on a referral for the same

im sorry I can’t offer any more advice.

    Many thanks D

  • Hi D

He discovered a lump in his neck just under his jaw bone on the left hand side.

He was referred to the hospital and was diagnosed with HPV cancer. They think it started in his tonsil although he did not have any symptoms there until he found the lump in his neck. It had spread to his lymph nodes but they are hopeful that it can be treated.

Although the treatment is not nice it is a cancer that has a high rate of recovery and there is more chance of recovery if you turn out to be HPV positive, apparently it is like the male version of cervical cancer, lots  of people have HPV but it is whether it manifests into cancer and the prognosis is good.

Good luck with your referral and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards
