Coming off of dextamethasone

My mum has two secondary endometrial cancers, one in the deep lymph nodes behind the stomach and the other is a brain metastasis in the frontal lobe. She's been having treatment for two years but her last treatment was in May this year for the brain cancer, she had stereotactic brain surgery (one massive dose of radiotherapy to the brain) and was put on Dextamethasone for the swelling. She's been taking lower doses but every time she tries to get off them completely she feels terrible, serious fatigue and can't function well. She is desperate to get off the steroid as they have given her awful swollen feet and legs and her mobility is very poor, plus sensitive skin and aches and pains.

we spoke to her consultant yesterday who basically just said take a low dose if you need to but mum really wants to get off it. Mum was only taking 0.5mg per day.  Can anyone offer any idea of how long she might feel crap for before she'll improve??

thank you

  • Hello a-for-anita

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is struggling to find a balance with her medication and the side effects. Sometimes it can be difficult to work out if the benefits of a drug are worth the side effects.

It's good that your Mum has spoken to her Consultant about her medication. Unfortunately it's impossible for us to say how long these symptoms may or may not last but do speak to the team again if she's really struggling to manage things.
If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
