BC surgery

I was booked in for a mastectomy next Wednesday but had a phone call a couple of days ago......had a cancellation and can I get to the ward in the next 2 hours. I was shocked but had surgery yesterday and just waiting to go home. Feels weird with just one breast as being a larger lady it was also used as my cup holder !! But never mind I'm here ....it's a little uncomfortable and tight especially in my armpit but I've managed to do my exercises. Just can't wait to get into my own bed !!!

The staff have been fantastic here and I feel lucky to have the specialist team I've got.

So it's chin up, lots of tea, rest and recuperate xx

  • Hello K70,

Wow it all happened really fast. It's great that they called you following this cancellation and that you have now had your surgery. I hope you are safely home now  in the comfort of your own bed and recovering well. Keep doing those important exercises! If you have any questions or need a chat, our nurses are only a phone call away on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I am glad you were looked after so well in hospital and that you had a great specialist team.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, plenty of rest and most importantly plenty of tea!

    Best wishes,

    Hi K70,

I'm so glad to hear that your surgery is behind you now. It will be a little tight for a while, but I'm glad to hear that you are maaging to do your exercises. Do your best to do these regularly, as it makes all the difference to your recuperation.

I hope that you managed to get discharged yesterday. It's great to hear that you've had a good experience with the hospital staff, but I'm sure that you'll be glad to get home and, back to your own bed.

Have you any plans for reconstruction, or for reducing the size of your existing breast? I was lucky, mine was bilateral, so I didn't have that problem!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Morning Jolamine

I'm doing really well apart from sleeping but I was always up and down  all night before the op. There are plans for a reconstruction but I'm not in any rush so maybe a year or so and I'll have a think about it more.

I'm just getting ready for my next stage in Sept as o think the chemo is going to be the hardest part for me.

My surgeon was only going to do a lumpectomy but after having a good discussion with her I decided for the mastectomy.

Hopefully the drain is out by next week as I'm not a bag person and the amount of times I've gone to throw it off without thinking !!! Haha

    Take care

    Hi Karen,

I'm glad to hear that you are doing well. I suppose this break prior to reconstruction gives you a chance to see how you cope without reconstruction. I am sure that you'll be delighted to get your drain removed - I certainly was!

I haven't had chemo, but it does seem to be a challenge for most people - still if it does what it says on the tin, then it'll be well worth it.

    Keep in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
