Treatment break: incurable oesophagus cancer

My husband has oesophageal cancer, incurable. He is 53 years old. He has recently completed 8 cycles of EOX chemotherapy. He is now on a 3 month treatment break and preparing to go back to work next month. He has had a scan which shows some shrinkage of the cancer, both the tumour and in the lymph nodes that it had spread to. However although he takes indigestion tablets daily he is suffering from awful heartburn and indigestion today! His last chemo was at the end of June and I'm worried that having a break from treatment is causing this! I might be completely paranoid but he doesn't like to talk about anything cancer related or see me worried or upset.  Has anyone got experience of treatment break or incurable oesophagus cancer?

  • Hello MandypK,

A big welcome to Cancer Chat! I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title adding the words 'incurable oesophagus cancer' - this will increase the chances of your post being seen by someone who has before been affected by oesophagus cancer and I hope that you will hear from others who have also been in a similar position and had a 3 months treatment break like your husband.

It's good news that the scan has shown some shrinkage of the cancer both in the tumour and the lymph nodes it spread to. It seems that the chemotherapy has worked well and I hope that his return to work next month goes smoothly and that he works with a supportive team.

It might be worth ringing your GP and mentioning that he is suffering from severe heartburn and indigestion and whether there is anything they could suggest for this. It could be a good time too to discuss your concerns with his GP or specialist about the fact that he is having a treatment break and whether this would have an impact and be linked to his current heartburn and indigestion issues.

I will now let others who have had a similar experience come and share their story with you. If you ever wanted to discuss this with our nurses, you are very welcome to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Very best wishes to you and your husband,
