Cold cap - my experience; it worked for me

I have just completed four rounds of chemo for breast cancer and my biggest fear throughout my diagnosis was loosing my hair .. I was told  by the breast care nurses that I would loose all my hair and it was more than likely that the cold cap would not work.

well ..... it did work !! I've lost probably about 20%of my hair , but have no patches at all ... I have fine hair but a lot of it and I think that has helped .. and looking at my hair you wouldn't know that I had just had chemo .. I'm 7 weeks from my last treatment and my hair is still shedding a little but again not that you would notice it

i have been very gentle with it and only washed it once a week ( great in lockdown !) bought a silk pillow , and taken vivascal tablets ..

as regards the cold cap , I didn't have a problem with it didn't find it painful , the strap could be a little uncomfortable, just make sure it's not too tight. I would dampen my hair and condition it and the nurses were so supportive ... if this is one of your fears I would definitely give it a try...  the nurses were amazed at how I had kept my hair .. just started stage 3 for me .. radiotherapy.. and that's a breeze now .

  • I just want to add my agreement to Ajw's positive post. The cold cap is also working for me much better than expected. I'm about to have my 4th cycle of EC for breast cancer and have shed about 30% of my hair. It is also fine but I have lots of it so I have no patches as yet. I also had it cropped into a pixie cut (which I love!) early on. I still have three more months of chemo ahead of me so who knows what will happen but I've been glad to have three months of keeping my hair when I was warned that I would not. Luckily the cold cap doesn't bother me at all and it gets a lot better after for the first 10-15 mins. I also wet my hair and put conditioner on it before getting the cap fitted. It's also worth being a bit fussy about the fitting - it's important that the cap is really snug and fits around the hairline. So size down if you think it's too loose. The first thing I am going to do when this is all over is raise money for more cold caps at my hospital because even at the large and famous cancer centre where I am being treated there is always a queue for an available cold cap and sometimes they break down. I also only wash my hair once a week (Aveeno Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo is great) and use a silk pillow. Who knows why the cap works for some and not others? There's not much research into this and I'm not going to beat myself up if the cold cap stops working for me further down the line, at least I gave it a go.
