Skin and nipple Necrosis after double mastectomy

Hi everyone,

I had a double mastectomy with implant reconstruction 12 days ago. Everything seemed fine at first, however one breast was a lot more bruised than the other. I had my drains removed 10 days post op and my surgeon said that I had nipple and skin necrosis on my right breast. The skin is red raw, blistered and weeping and my nipples have turned from pink to black. I've had my bad breast covered in dressings that are changed daily, and have been told it's just a waiting game to see if my nipple and skin will survive. I'm fairly young, healthy, don't smoke etc. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience after a mastectomy, and if their nipples and skin have recovered? Any advice would be fab. Thank you!

  • Hi there ..

I had a drain with my masectomy , but had a total right masectomy,  so I'm sorry I can't answer your question .. but my scar got very angry looking , into a mauve colour and was weeping also ...

You sound a very caring lass , and I saw in your last post, you are worried about bothering the Drs or cancer nurses ... but that is what they are there for, I've had mine drained twice, and one of my cancer nurses, stayed behind in her own time to do it ... l know with this carona everything is harder to get seen now, but you must keep an eye on it, and if you get worried or it becomes hot to the touch, please don't hesitate to call them, or even 111 to get advice, esp if you live alone with your little one ...

You are being amazingly brave, and I hope you have some family that can help you at this time .. I'm on here most days if you want a chat, or questions on anything .. I had mine in 2017 ... so I know it does get better .. I now have a little white line where my boob used to be ..

But at least we get back , time ... esp with our kids ...

Sending you a vertual hug... Chrissie x

  • Hey! I guess it's been a while since you posted your question but I have just seen it. I had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy with autologous reconstruction a month ago and have the same problems. I am 31, non smoker, small cup and therefore flap size, moderate build, no diabetes or any risk factors yet 5 weeks after my recon by breasts look like terrifying building sites and I too have been advised to wait it out with honey dressings and the like. How large was your necrotic area? How was the situation resolved for you? Any insight you might have would be so helpful :(
