Breast cancer

I had my right breast off in march  I was just wondering  if I could have my left  breast off as I'm worring about it coming in that breast the doctor said it's clear in that breast  thank you

  • Hello Susanl,

I think you can have faith in the doctor's guidance on this as they will be in the best position to advise you. It's good news that it is clear in that breast and that the doctor doesn't think it is necessary to have surgery on the left breast. Do discuss this with your specialist though and make sure to share your worries and concerns with him/her.

Should you wish to talk about this with one of our cancer nurses, you are welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Susani,

Many people feel as you do about having the second breast removed too. I was fortunate and ,my surgeon agreed to give me a double mastectomy, when I had a recurrence a year after I was first diagnosed. From what I have gathered from others on this site over the years, most surgeons claim that there is no benefit to be had from removing a perfectly healthy breast. As a result they refuse to do it.

If you haven't already discussed this with your surgeon, please do as s/he will be in the best position to answer this question for you.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
