Radiotherapy burns

Two weeks since my last treatment of radiotherapy to my chest wall. My skin has got worse, red raw with open weepy sores. The hospital gave me Polymem dressings, they are non adhesive and kept in place with tape which hurts my skin. I've now run out, my GP or pharmacy are unable to provide the dressing so I will have to go the Hospital again which is an hour each way. I'm not sure how to dress my skin, whether to wash it with just water. It really is so sore and uncomfortable, any one else suffered from radiotherapy burns and what was the best treatment?
it's difficult these days with COVID-19 around as trying to talk to doctors or nurses involves a telephone message and waiting for a return call for advice .

  • Yes this is part of the side-effects of radiotherapy, I've 4 more days to go until my radiotherapy treatment is finished. I've had 6 weeks of radiotherapy for throat cancer, my neck is in some mess burns seeping burning beetroot red really painful can't wait till my treatment finishes as am finding it hard and painful to swallow even water, loads of mucus, very dry mouth, ulcers  in my mouth totally drained. Hang in there and take your pain killers and morphine to ease the pain. God bless All.

  • Hi there

My treatment was a year ago now and I'm feeling fine, but I do sympathise with you as it is awful when you are in the middle of it. I had mouth ulcers when I was having chemo and they are so painful. It will be over soon and the healing will start, I wish you all the best

  • Hi thanks for getting back to me much appreciated. I finish my treatment on Tuesday fingers crossed it's all worth it in the end. I am so tired with all the travelling up and down. After Tuesday I am looking forward to my recovery. How long did it take you to recover. Hope all is well. Kind Regards.

  • I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy on my chest. It was the middle of 2019 so a while ago but I remember it got worse before it got better . I was very sore and had to go back to the hospital to have special dressings all around my chest, it was over my masectomy scar. Within a couple of weeks it had healed and now is a distant memory. Not a pleasant experience but if it prevents those cancer cells recurring then must be worth it. I was very fatigued after all my treatment, I also had chemo before radiotherapy . It took me a long while to get my energy levels back but now I feel fine. Wishing you speedy recovery it really is amazing how the body heals and don't hesitate to ask for help from the nurses, I had mine on speed dial for a while!
