Has anyone had long term radiotherapy, how did it affect you

Hi, I have recently been diagnosed as they found a tumour in my abdo. ive been recieveing radiotherapy 5 times a week for the past 12 weeks. As they found it early, the radio is a curative method, however they have said to be they want to change my course and give me another cycle of radio, giving me a week off and have radio for another 12 weeks. although i trust my doctors and whatever they think is best i will do, but all the research i done when i was first diagnosed said that radiotherapy lasts up to 12 weeks and teh longer it goes on for the higher the risk of long- term complications. i have tried to find out aboit how 6 months of radio would effect me but i can't fond anything on the internet, 6 months seems so long and everything i have read says radio lasts upto 10 weeks so i why would they reccomend such a long course. my next appointment is next week so i guess i will ask then but i wondered if anyone has had a similar experience or has had radiotherapy for a long time and would be willing to share how it affected you.

  • Hi Kara2020

I'm sorry to hear that you're having treatment at the moment although it sounds positive that you've been told this is with an aim of curing you.

We know that it can be really unsettling when treatment plans change and it can lead to a lot of questions. Did the team give you any indication about why they are recommending the change?
Obviously they will be best placed to discuss things with you but I wonder if you might it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses beforehand. You might find that it answers some questions or raises others for you.
If you'd like to talk to them, they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that the team are able to give you some reassurance at your appointment.

    Best wishes,
