Drain bags after double mastectomy

Hi everyone! I'm due to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction on the 24th June. I've noticed online that you can buy bags to hold drains in post surgery. I live alone with my 6 year old daughter so bags to hold my 2 drains will be essential. Just wondering, do you get them from the NHS after surgery or do you have to buy your own before hand? I forgot to ask at my last consultation and don't want to pester them by asking. I'm having surgery in Scotland if that makes any difference.

Thank you! Amy

  • Hi Amyp25 and welcome to the forum.

I know a few of our ladies here will have used drain bags. They are really useful items as it means that the drain and tubing is safely tucked away. If you have one that goes over your shoulder it'll mean that you won't have to carry it.

I would suggest giving your BCN a quick ring this week and just double check. Some hospitals do give them to patients after surgery, some don't and with the current Covid19 situation things aren't necessarily as readily available as they would normally be. I'm sure that if you leave a message someone will get back to you.

I hope that your surgery and recovery goes smoothly.

    Best wishes,
